Conservation Agriculture (Empower Farmers South Sudan) Program

Empower Farmers South Sudan is transforming rural livelihoods by helping smallholder farmers grow more food using simple, sustainable, and affordable conservation farming methods.

Program Mission

Emppower Farmers South Sudan (EFSS) teaches smallholder farmers how to grow more food with less effort, using the Foundations for Farming model. Our mission is simple: improve food security, create dignified agricultural livelihoods for the communities, and help families thrive through climate-resilient farming.

Key Focus Areas

Demonstration Farming Learning by Seeing, understanding, and doing.

National Adoption & Trainer Development Training the trainers who will transform the nation.

Agroforestry & Climate Action — Restoring the land while producing food sustainably.

Farmer Entrepreneurship & Market AccessHelping farmers move from subsistence to opportunity.

Demonstration farms are the foundation of EFSS’s training and community engagement model. These farms serve as national hubs for teaching conservation agriculture, promoting sustainable techniques, and showcasing practical, low-cost methods that farmers can replicate at home.

This focus area ensures the EFSS model expands rapidly and sustainably by building a strong cadre of trained leaders who multiply knowledge across communities, counties, and institutions.

Agroforestry and climate action are essential pillars for building lasting resilience in South Sudan’s fragile ecosystems. EFSS integrates climate-smart, regenerative practices that restore soil fertility, conserve water, and enhance biodiversity.

Beyond food security, EFSS supports the economic empowerment of farmers by strengthening value chains, improving market linkages, and enabling smallholders to generate income through agricultural enterprises.

Program Results & Achievements (2025)

A dynamic team of 21 staff, field champions, and program interns actively manage the Juba Demonstration Farm, leading farmer training, data collection, and implementation of sustainable farming innovations that enhance productivity and community resilience.

Trained 54 smallholder farmers & program interns in the Foundations for Farming (FfF) principles, equipping them with practical conservation agriculture skills to improve soil health, increase yields, and enhance climate resilience.

Achieved a maize yield of 472.44 kg from 0.132 ha (1,320 m²) and harvested 632.97 kg of assorted vegetables and groundnuts from 0.01865 ha (186.5 m²), demonstrating strong productivity from smallholder plots under the conservation agriculture model.

Established a 50 m × 100 m Demonstration Farm at Juba 2, Gumbo-Sherikat, Juba, South Sudan, serving as a model site for farmer training, conservation agriculture, and youth engagement.

Champions and interns achieved great success through innovative field experiments employing natural pest control methods such as wood ash, red pepper, and tobacco extracts. These eco-friendly practices significantly reduced fall armyworm infestations, demonstrating a sustainable and low-cost breakthrough in pest management for smallholder farmers.

Champions and interns successfully cultivated eggplants and tomatoes in sacks, showcasing an innovative, space-efficient method that enables smallholder farmers to grow nutritious crops and improve household food security.
