Keeping children in school and creating stronger learning opportunities, especially for girls and students facing the greatest barriers.

Conflict, displacement and poverty keep many children in South Sudan out of school or in classrooms without trained teachers, learning materials or safe facilities. Girls, children with disabilities and displaced children are most likely to miss out, and hunger at home pulls children away from learning.
Access & retention — Removing barriers for the most marginalised.
Teaching quality — Strengthening teachers and providing learning materials.
Safe, inclusive spaces — Improving facilities and safeguarding.
Community ownership — Engaging caregivers and local leaders.
EmpowerKids–South Sudan’s Education Programme works to expand access to quality education and create opportunities for children and young people to continue learning.
Our work includes scholarship pathways, teacher development, school infrastructure improvements, solar electrification, school supplies and community engagement.
We focus particularly on students and communities facing barriers to education, while working with schools, teachers, families, partners and education stakeholders to strengthen learning opportunities.
Practical support for students, teachers and schools
Creating pathways for high-performing South Sudanese students to pursue fully funded university education. Through the Bridge2Rwanda partnership, EKSS has supported scholarship placements for students who have demonstrated academic potential and are ready to continue their education.
Supporting teachers to strengthen their knowledge and classroom practice. EKSS has supported teachers to participate in training at Arizona State University, helping build teaching capacity and strengthen student-centred learning approaches.
Helping schools access reliable electricity so that learning can continue beyond daylight hours and schools can make better use of digital and educational resources. EKSS has supported solar electrification at Juba Girls Secondary School and Nimule Model Secondary School.
Education requires more than classrooms. EKSS supports school-related activities and community engagement that help strengthen the wider environment around children's education.
